The People
COOLmob is a sustainable living project of the Environment Centre NT. COOLmob staff and volunteers work with households and the community to help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a range of activities which work towards:
- improved home energy efficiency
- reduced car usage
- reduced water consumption and
- reduced waste going to landfill
COOLmob staff include Robin Knox (Program Manager), Steve Beagley, Adrielle Drury and Bridget Edmunds
Power and Water Corporation subsidises our home sustainability audits and we ask waged households to contribute $10 to their audit costs.
The COOLmob programme is a community effort. Scores of people have been involved at various stages to make it all happen. COOLmob volunteers continue to help us in the office, at public events and under taking special jobs as they arise. We thank you and hope you're as proud of the results as we are.
If you would like to get involved as a committee member or a volunteer please call COOLmob on 8981 2532.
The website team needs a special thanks - Justin Tutty, Michael Cauce and Robin Knox.
Dolphin Software have provided great web development, maintenance and hosting support.
Funding
Project funding
Our major funder is the Northern Territory Government. We have also received grants and support from Power and Water Corporation, Darwin City Council, The Community Benefit Fund, Cutting Edge and 11th Hour Group. Previously, the project was part of the national Cool Communities project funded by the Australian Government through the Australian Greenhouse Office Cool Communities initiative.
Stage 1
The first stage of the project was launched by the Chief Minister in June 2002. In the first stage we received funding from the Australian Government to support 100 households by providing Home Energy Audits, information, financial assistance and workshops and social events. We started off working with households from the suburbs of Parap, Ludmilla, Fannie Bay and The Narrows and then invited households from all over Darwin and Palmerston (including the Darwin rural area) to join us.
We aimed to help these 100 households each save 750 kg of carbon dioxide per year and achieved an estimated saving of 1,900 kg per household per year – that's more than double our target!
Stage 2
Stage two of the project was launched on 5 March 2004 and a further 60 households joined the project. In 2004 we also won an Environmental Excellence Award from the Power and Water Corporation.
Stage 3
From September 2004 COOLmob became a uniquely Territorian project. We work closely with our sister organisation in Alice Springs, Desert Knowledge Australia COOLmob. We continued to provide Home Energy Audits as well as educate the community about how to reduce greenhouse gases through community service announcements, the media and printed information resources.
Stage 4
From July 2006, further funding from the NT Government will enabled COOLmob to expand beyond Greenhouse issues to become a sustainable living project. Our first step has been to include information about sustainable domestic water use.
Stage 5
In 2008 COOLmob expanded its work to include audits of Public Benevolent Institutions and in 2009 COOLmob commenced auditing in Katherine. In 2009 COOLmob, in conjunction with the Australian Solar Energy Society (AuSES) also established a very popular Photo Voltaic Bulk Buy of panels for household roofs. We also expanded our staff and the number of audits we do each year. In 2010 we established a COOLmob Bulk Buy of the very efficient variable speed pool pump.
We are very grateful for the support we have received to date. We hope that the project will continue for some time into the future, and have set up our website and audit registration to help ensure this can happen, but this is in no way guaranteed.
We encourage community members to consider contributing some time to help us keep this great initiative going by joining the Steering Committee or registering as a volunteer when they sign up there household.
